Roadway Straight Nonogram (15×15)

This is the Roadway Straight nonogram — a 15×15 picture logic puzzle. Use the number clues beside each row and column to work out which squares are filled, and the picture appears as you go. Every square can be deduced; you never have to guess.

How this board opens

This one opens itself. One sweep of the overlap rule — every row read against its clue lengths, then every column — is worth 203 of the 225 cells, 90% of the board, before you have deduced anything of your own. The most generous opening is column 1, which gives up 15 cells on its own. 7 of the 30 lines are decided outright by their clues, with no room to slide. From there the board finishes on row-and-column logic alone — there is no point where you have to try a cell both ways and see which one breaks. The finished picture fills 92 cells, and one run in the clues is 15 long — near enough the full span of a line that it fixes itself the moment you reach it.

About this category

Buses, cars, a taxi, a truck, a gearshift, trains running into a tunnel, ships from a small fishing boat to a modern hull at a dock, a sextant, a suitcase, a hotel reception desk, and the signage that surrounds all of it — a stop sign, a parking sign, traffic lights, the pictograms on a washroom door. It is the shelf of getting somewhere, and it is built almost entirely from objects that were designed to be recognised quickly.
